The three Guianas exist thanks to their political colonial history and the competition among Britain, France, and the Netherlands for dominance in the Caribbean region generally, and in world politics in particular. The end result is two independent nations, Guyana and Suriname, and a French overseas territory, French Guiana. Guyana is the largest country, with its capital of Georgetown on the coast. Travel inland is difficult, but there is a road to the Brasilian border, connecting with Highway BR401. French Guiana and Suriname dominate Side 2 of the map, with insets of Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, and Cayenne, French Guiana being included. An inset of Kourou is also shown. There is no land crossing to Guyana or Brasil, and the interiors of both countries remains undeveloped, although a ferry connects Highway N1 in French Guiana to Albina in Suriname. Definitely off the beaten track adventurism here!
