The largest lakes in the world are the five North American lakes known as the Great Lakes. Combined with the Saint Lawrence Seaway, they bring ocean-going ships to the middle of the continent, but they are amazing natural wonder in their own right. All are shared by Canada and the USA except Lake Michigan, which is wholly inside American territory. Lake Superior is so large that all of Great Britain would sink into it if one were able to lift the isles and transport them to America. They are so large that it takes three days just to drive around them. Duluth, Chicago, Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, Buffalo, and Toronto are all included, as well as surrounding countryside. This map is truly America’s heartland of industrial strength and prosperity. It is also the historical centre of Canadian/American expansion westward after the Revolutionary War, and the site of numerous battles, forts, and historic sites.
