INTRODUCTION

The aftermath of our trip to Europe and the Middle East continues to resonate. We have added four temporary cartographers to our staff to deal with an escalating number of revisions needing to be done and are pleased to welcome Steffi Siegmund as a full-time staff member to our production division, joining Chris and Dinesh. We are also losing our newest and youngest staff member for a while, as he has itchy feet and travel plans to visit relatives in Hanoi. Unfortunately, he’s too young to travel on his own, so he’s taking mother Lan Phuong, our administrative officer, and father Ling, our warehouse manager, with him for a month. Who knows, maybe he’ll be walking by the time he returns! Edwin is back from China, and Joe from Iceland, and George from Hong Hong, so we no sooner get back to normal staff levels when somebody else takes off. It never ends.

FEAST OR FAMINE

The reality of publishing is that nothing goes as planned. After two months of sending artwork to the printer and receiving nothing back, we queried why. Well, to save shipping costs, they were going to send four maps at once, then a fifth arrived, so they decided to print that and add it to the maps awaiting shipment. Then a sixth and a seventh set of files arrived with the same result. Last Friday, ten skids/pallets of maps arrived – 10 titles on one day. That’s a record for us! Some are brand new titles, others are updates, and some are virtual reprints, as they were only updated a few months ago, but have already gone through their print runs. We’ll be sending out press releases over the next few weeks, but all the titles noted below are in our warehouse now.

LANGENSCHEIDT CLOSES DOWN

It can hardly be a surprise to most of us in the trade that the German company Langenscheidt Group, having finally sold off its American Map component to Universal Maps (aka Capa), has decided to close down the Insight Guide, Insight Map, Berlitz line of guides and maps, and the Langenscheidt dictionaries divisions completely and retreat to Europe, where Insight and Berlitz will be based in England, and will somehow gravitate to America magically. A recent article in Publisher’s Weekly put as good a spin on this news as possible, claiming that Ingram would be assuming responsibility for importing and marketing the Insight Guides and the Berlitz Guides. Considering that Ingram is a ‘passive’ marketing firm, and has absolutley no experience in importing or actively marketing anything, don’t expect to see great things happening. In other words, don’t pin your hopes on obtaining anything more than whatever inventory Langenscheidt has turned over to Ingram.

Interestingly, no mention was made in the article about either the Insight Maps line or the Berlitz map line, which either disappear completely in this latest shuffling of the deck chairs on the Titanic, or were considered to be so unimportant by Langenscheidt as to be unworthy of any comment. The Mobil Travel Guides, another Langenscheidt cast-off, have apparently been moved to National Book Marketing, which is doing such a good job of marketing Michelin. Hammond atlases will apparently be marketed somehow by Langenscheidt’s ‘parent company’ in Germany, which was unnamed, but is the Bertlesman Brothers. Bye, Bye Hammond. Don’t pin your store’s future sales on any of these lines. If anyone can see some good news in this announcement, please say so, because it really depresses me; especially since I’ve been their Canadian map distributor for years and they didn’t even have the courtesy to tell me.

HEMA MAPS NORTH AMERICA IS SHUTTING DOWN

They say that things happen in threes, so I’m waiting for the next bombshell. Here’s Number 2. I’ve just received word from Rob Bogheim, the General Manager of Hema Maps, to advise me that Hema is closing down their North American operation at the end of December. I introduced Hema Maps to the North American market when they first started publishing and ITMB represented them quite well for a number of years. They decided to set up their own distribution operation several years ago, operating out of Indianapolis, with Chris Knoebel as President, and using Map Link as a warehouse and fulfillment centre. Three years ago, Bill  hunt approached Hema with a proposal that they buy him out and take over Map Link. Henry Bogheim spent some time in Santa Barbara examining the prospect before deciding to pass. Hema continued using Map Link as a warehouse/fulfillment centre until ML collapsed last June. Despite repeated assurances by Hema that everything was being shipped to a new warehouse in Indianapolis, it now appears that everything will be shipped back to Australia in January. As a long-time distributor of Hema Maps, ITMB will be continuing to stock and market Hema’s Australian and New Zealand titles, but it appears that means importing from Brisbane.

LAN

Anyone who has known about ITMB for long is aware of the two principal partners who own and manage the business; namely, Jack and Lan Joyce. Most of you see us at trade shows, where Jack does most of the talking and Lan decorates the stand and helps organize meetings. ITMB is a 50-50 partnership, but both Lan and myself fulfill very different roles. I co-ordinate sales and finance, and she controls the development of new artwork, supervises all stages of the production of ‘camera ready’ updates, trains and interviews and hires staff, plus negotiates prices with our printers, and deals with any printing problems, which she is capable of doing because, in addition to be a trained cartographer, she is also an accredited printer. I have the simpler task.

This is what Lan does, not who Lan IS. What she is in reality is a talented painter, musician, and dancer. As a teen-ager, she had her own ‘rock’ band, if you could call a group of pig-tailed girls wearing Mao suits and belting out revolutionary songs in Hanoi a rock group. She writes songs; she doesn’t know how or why, but they just develop in her mind until they have to come out, which can happen on airplanes, in the car during long drives across America, or at work. She sang a song she’d made up at our daughter’s wedding and had most of the women in the audience sobbing by its passionate finale. She has translated Canada’s national anthem into Vietnamese, providing real meaning to our anthem for hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese-Canadians who don’t understand many of the words in English. “We stand on guard for thee”. What’s a thee? That type of word has no meaning to someone not well-versed in English.

She teaches young Vietnamese children born in Canada their native language so they don’t forget their heritage, and leads a small singing group of elementary chidren in singing Vietnamese songs. With adults, she is one of the organizers of the South East Asian cultural association that is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the songs and dances of a variety of Asian cultures and regularly performs traditional folk dances at multicultural events. Our home is a gathering spot for adults coming together to practice for forthcoming dances and choral performances. Three or four times a week, I arrive home to a pile of shoes in the foyer and the sounds of an accordian or a guitar emanating from upstairs, and find a dozen people singing in the kitchen or dancing in the living room, or playing musical instruments in the dining room. It’s all part of living with Lan. Recently, Lan was awarded a certificate from our national Parliament to acknowledge her contributions towards enhancing Canada’s rich multicultural heritage. This award defines who Lan is by what she does. She loves doing it and is very good at doing it. She’s a remarkably talented lady.

GIVING MONEY TO CHARITIES? WHO TO AVOID!

The President of the American Red Cross earns $651,957 annually. That’s $74.42 per hour, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The head of the United way earns $375,000 plus benefits. UNICEF’s head receives $1,200,000 plus expenses, plus a Rolls Royce. That’s $1,369.86us PER HOUR, twenty four hours a day. Incredible? Yes, but true. I was nearly run over by a UNICEF beer truck in Rwanda and their office building in Dakar has so many Mercedes limos parked in front that it needs special security guards. Give to UNICEF? Not likely. I prefer charities that feed the hungry in our city.

BENCHMARK ATLASES

I’ve received a letter from the law firm representing Map Link, advising me that the half-interest in Benchmark Atlases that was owned by Map Link is to be sold at auction by the bankruptcy court that is administering the affairs of the defunct firm. Surprisingly, Bill Hunt, who accumulated four million dollars worth of debt before bankrupting Map Link, has magically found $100,000 to put in an initial offer for Benchmark. The auction is only for a commercial, non-voting, non-owning interest of the right to distribute half of the products and keep half the profits produced by the other owner, who retains full rights over the artwork, including its usage, and all matters pertaining to decisions pertaining to Benchmark. It’s got to be the stupidest auction I’ve ever heard of, where bidders vie with each other to acquire absolutely nothing. The reason for this rests in US bankruptcy law, and it is necessary, legally, to sell Map Link’s half interest in order to complete the ‘sale’ of the last remaining asset of bankrupt Map Link and turn over the legal corpse to Chapter 7 for burial. By the way, Bill hasn’t paid the lawyers who have been representing his interests for so long that they are appealing to the court for restitution. So is his accountant. What a farce!

DANCE WITH THE STARS?

This will only make sense to Norto Americanos, but a 67-year-old man in Wisconsin was so enraged by the fact that Sarah Palin’s daughter reached the finals of the tv show Dance with The Stars that he hauled out his trusty shotgun and blasted away at his television set until the poor machine was nothing but splinters. His family fled, the police arrived, and this guy, who obviously takes his dancing VERY seriously, held off the police for an amazing 15HOURS before finally calming down enough to lay down his arms and allow officers to take him into custody. Does this “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it any more” remind anyone of a movie?

HERE’S ANOTHER DUMB CROOK

This one really takes the cake for me. This actually happened recently in Ontario. The police noticed a car in the HOV lane (meaning it must have at least two persons in it) that appeared to have only the driver. The vehicle was also driving considerably over the speed limit. When they attempted to get the driver to pull over, a big speed chase ensued, ending when the under-aged teenaged driver crashed the vehicle into a store window. The car, naturally, was stolen; the driver licence-less. The moral of the story is that, if you’re going to steal somebody’s car, don’t draw attention to yourself! Honestly, I don’t make these stories up; they actually happen.

NEW ITMB ARTWORK UNDER DEVELOPMENT or AT PRESS

ITMB is still experiencing a surge of sales of certain titles and as a result, we are concentrating more on revising and updating our existing titles than on bringing our brand new ones. With some new editions, we are adding additional maps to the backsides of existing titles, or combining a slower-selling title with a companion.

Barbados has reached initial proofing stage. After review, it goes back to the cartographer for further work, which won’t take long because it’s in very good shape.

Hawaiian Islands is out of stock. We are preparing brand new artwork for this popular touristic destination, so it will be unavailable for a couple of months.

Iraq and Baghdad is being updated for release in January. This will be a combined map.

Mali is out of stock and is being updated for re-release in January.

Patagonia is out of stock and being updated. No ETA is available at the moment.

Puerto Rico is almost out of stock and is awaiting time for updating.

Russia is out of stock and is being updated. No ETA is available at the moment, but it shouldn’t take long.

Tokyo/Central Japan has unexpectedly run out of copies sooner than expected. It will be re-issued in January.

Tunisia and Libya is out of stock. We are re-working it into a double-sided map with Libya. No ETA is available.

Vancouver Northshore Hiking Trails is almost out of stock. We will be replacing the artwork with new govt. topo info and re-releasing this title in the spring of 2011.

Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia regional map is now out of stock. A new edition is underway, for release in January.

A JOKE

Scotty Jock dearly wanted to win the lottery. He prayed heartily, but nothing happened. After six weeks of this, he was getting pretty fed up. “Why are you doing this to me, God?” The thunder clapped and the voice that could only be you-know-who boomed out “At least meet me half way, laddie; at least buy a ticket!”.

NEW TITLES October and November, 2010

Ethiopia Travel Reference Map is at press and expected in December

Ghana Travel Reference Map is at press and expected in December.

Honduras Travel Reference Map 4th Edition 2011 1:750,000 ISBN 9781553412380 UPC 815534123893 $12.95cdn/us, E8.95 7.99GBP – Having been to Honduras, I’m always pleased to see yet another print run sell out, so we can do a new one. In this edition, we have improved the road claffification system, added more capsule comments, noted newly-opened border crossings, and prepared a brand new map of Tegucigalpa (which is actually pronounced just as it’s spelled Te-goo-se-gal-pa). This Central American country has undergone a coup d’etat recently, which has marred its image, but the new government appears to be making no particular changes, and tourists are still welcome. Printed on paper, single-sided; AVAILABLE.

Indonesia Travel Reference Map 3rd Ed. 2011 1:2,400,000 ISBN 9781553412441 UPC 815534124432 $12.95cdn/us, E8.95 7.99GBP – The many islands of the Indonesian archipelago include many different peoples and opportunities for exploration. As a country, Indonesia is huge, having more than 700 islands and several seas within its boundaries. This map shows everything the country has to offer on one sheet, and is an excellent overview of a large and complex country. One of the best attributes of this map is the ferry service that joins disparate islands together. This also enables the traveller to pass from island to island, going from exotic Sumatra to bustling Java to romantic Bali easily and inexpensively. Indonesia is, of course, one of the emrging powerhouses of Asia, but it is also one of the the great touristic destinations of the world. In addition to this map, ITMB also publishes maps of Sumatra, Java, Bali, Borneo, and Jakarta. This, in itself, indicates the importance of Indonesia. Printed on paper, double-sided; AVAILABLE.

Japan Travel Reference Map 7th Ed. 2011 1:1,100,000 ISBN and UPC unchanged, price unchanged – We printed Japan last March. Obviously, we didn’t print enough copies. For some reason, demand for a map of Japan suddenly went through the roof, and we’ve had to reprint. This is unusual for us, but is part and parcel of publishing during a recession. As this is the same map, just a second printing, please keep selling whatever inventory any of you may have, and be assured that adequate inventory is in our warehouse. AVAILABLE.

Japan North and Hokkaido Travel Reference Map 2nd Ed. 2011 1:800,000 ISBN 9781553418955 UPC 815534189561 $12.95cdn/us E8.95 7.99GBP – In one sense, this is a brand new map, in that the artwork is all brand new. In another sense, it is our map of Hokkaid re-worked into a more marketable format. In any case, it is a very much-needed sectional map of that portion of Japan from Tokyo northwards. Hokkaido is actually one of the most interesting parts of Japan to visit. The island was opened to settlement only after the Ameicans forced Japan to allow contacts with foreign countries in 1868, thanks to Admiral Peary and Gunboat Diplomacy. Hokkaido has been relatively untouched by Japan’s rush to economic dominance, so is the country’s skiing capital in winter and the part of Japan most similar to America.  An inset map of Sapporo is included. The other side shows the main island of the country from Nagoya and Toyama (which are considerably west of Tokyo) through Tokyo itself (inset map included) north all the way to Aomori and the tunnel to Hokkaido. All known touristic sites are included, as well as the famous Shinkensen rail lines (and regular rail lines as well), motorways, all main and secondary highways, and everything is shown at a better scale that would be possible on our Japan map. ITMB also publishes a map of the southern portion of the country, called Kyoto and Southern Japan. This map is printed on paper, double-sided, and is AVAILABLE.

Kenya Travel Reference Map 3rd Ed. 2011 1:920,000 on waterproof paper ISBN 9781553412847 UPC 815534128423 $12.95cdn/us E8.95 7.99GBP – Our Africa series never fails to amaze me. Of course, I love Africa, having lived there for many years, and I’m always pleased by how many maps of different countries we sell each month. Kenya is a particular favourite because its tourist industry is so well-developed.  This map includes the Kilimanjaro and Arusha National Parks in Tanzania, because they are reasonably close to the border and accessible from Nairobi, but the true focus of the map is on the country of Kenya itself, not just the best-known parks. Lamu, on the northeasten coast, is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Mount Kenya can be accessed from either Nyeri on the west or Meru on the east. Maasai country west of Nairobi is particularly exciting to see, and anyone who has read The Flame Trees of Thika will enjoy a visit to that ton. My particular favourite part of Kenya is the far north, especially around Lake Turkana. ITMB publishes 33 different maps of Africa, more than any other firm. Ghana is at press and should be available shortly. Senegal/Gambia is noted below. Tanzania is ready to go to press, and Uganda will be going in January. Ethiopia should have a new edition very soon. Africa, Africa; always something new out of Africa (that’s Scipio, not me, saying that – 2,000 years ago). Double-sided; printed on ITM plastic paper for durability;  AVAILABLE.

Lebanon and Beirut Travel Reference Map 2nd Ed. 2011 1:190/8,000 ISBN 9781553412922 UPC 815534129239 $12.95cdn/us, E8.95 7.99GBP – We visited Lebanon in October to ground-truth the information we had placed on the artwork. I’m glad we did, because we were able to ‘fine-tune’ some of the road classifications and fix some minor errors of spelling and location. We were also able to discover a wealth of touristic information to add to our 2nd edition. Most importantly, we were able to explore fabulous Beirut and add lots of information to our artwork. As a result, we now have a double-sided map, with Lebanon at one scale filling one side, and an excellent map of Beirut filling the other side. To my knowledge this is the only commercially available map of either Lebanon or Beirut outside of Lebanon. We’ve done our best; now it is up to the market to critique it. Printed on paper, double-sided; AVAILABLE.

Mexico Baja California 8th Ed. 2011 – This is a reprint of a popular title that went through its initial run in a few months. We mis-calculated, and should have printed more, but who could predict that this part of Mexico would sell so well all of a sudden? Well, it did, and we reviewed the artwork before sending it to press, but this is just a second printing of the map we released in April. There are no changes of edition, the cover picture is unchanged, the ISBN and price are the same. As before, it is printed on ITM plastic paper, printed double-sided; AVAILABLE.

Mexico South Travel Reference Map 5th Ed. 2011 1:1,000,000 ISBN 9781553415428 UPC 815534154262 $12.95cdn/us, E8.95 7.99GBP – This is our most popular map of any section of Mexico, and it has undergone a major updating. Motorways are now shown as toll or free, new roads have been added, and new border crossings to Guatemala are shown. Both the Mexican and the Guatemalan portions of the map have been thoroughly reviewed, resulting in a much stronger and more accurate map. The coverage of the map is from historic San Miguel de Allende, northwest of Mexico City all the way to Acapulco and the Pacific coastline, and from Morelia in the west to the easternmost stretches of the Yucatan. This is an ideal map for anyone planning on visiting the resort towns of Ixtapa,  or Puerto Escondido, or explore the Mayan remains of Palenque or Tulum, or even to cross into northern Guatemala or visit Belize. Printed on paper, double-sided; AVAILABLE.

Pakistan Travel Reference Map 2nd Ed. 2011 1:1,200,000 ISBN 9781553413844 UPC 815534138491 $12.95cdn/us, E8.95 7.99GBP – This strategic country has suffered several calamities during 2010: terroist attacks, destabilization by militants, massive floods, and political pressures from Western nations to help control militants attacking Afghanistan. However, Pakistan is also home to Peshwar and the Khyber Pass, Lahore, Sukkur, and the fabled Northwest Frontier. One musn’t judge countries by news reports, which tend to focus on negative activity, but on one’s imagination. Pakistan is a lovely country to visit and enjoy. We have improved road classification information on this revised map, corrected a few (surprisingly few) spelling errors, and have noted the country’s growing network of first-class motorways. Printed on paper, double-sided, with a new inset map of Karatchi; AVAILABLE.

Peru Travel Reference Map same 5th Ed. 2011 Reprinted – no changes in ISBN or price. Peru is another example of just printing too few copies at a time of rising market interest. As hard as one tries to gauge market demand, there are always little surprises; in this case, a pleasant one. The printing earlier this year sold through much more quickly than expected. We reviewed the artwork, as we always do at the end of a print run, and decided to reprint as there were no noticable errors or changes. Enjoy! It’s AVAILABLE.

Philippines Travel Reference Map 3rd Ed. 2011 1:1,200,000 ISBN 9781553413745 UPC 815534137418 $12.95cdn/us, E8.95 7.99GBP – This is an excellent map of the Philippines; newly updated. There are no major changes; just the necessary road classification improvements and a re-working of the Manila inset. Printed on paper, double-sided; AVAILABLE.

Saint Lucia Travel Reference Map 1st Ed. 2011 1:40,000 ISBN 9781553413837 UPC 815534138309 $12.95cdn/us, E8.95 7.99GBP – Saint Lucia is one of the lovliest and most popular of the Caribbean island states. It is an ideal vacation travel destination, with excellent beaches, snorkelling, and accommodation facilities. It is also the hub of Carib ferry services, with boats plying between Castries, the capital, and St. Vincent to the south and Martinique to the north. This new service allows island-hopping to be practivcal for those on a budget, or those wishing to have a pleasant sea cruise combined with the opportunity to visit other islands. The map itself is at an excellent scale, shows physical features as well as roads, and locates all current touristic activity. This is a place I want to ground-truth this winter!!! Printed on paper, sinle-sided, inset of Castries; AVAILABLE.

Senegal and Gambia Travel Reference Map 6th Ed. 2011 1:740/340,000 ISBN 9781553413981 UPC 815534139894 $12.95cdn/us, E8.95 7.99GBP – We combined Senegal with Gambia in this edition, but as two completely separate maps – Senegal on one side, and Gambia on the other. During our recent research trip to the two countries, it became obvious to us that the two countries are so inter-linked that it doesn’t make sense to show one without the other. This new map has two covers, so the map can be displated Gambia side outwards, or Senegal side outwards. Both maps benefit from improved availability of information, thanks to our visit. Frankly, neither country appears to have progressed significantly over the past 40 years since my first visit, but I’m a cynic. The main east-west highways in both countries are being paved (again) by European countries providing foreign aid (again). No road mainenance camps are being constructed, however. Both countries have created resort communities for oceanside tourism development, which are shown on the map, as well as all road improvement projects we could verify. Both countries are full of smiling people, and are friendly to visitors, but Gambia has police/military check-points every 10 kms or so. Printed on paper, double-sided, AVAILABLE.

Tanzania Travel Reference Map is at press and expected in January.

American Highway Road Atlas: United States, Canada, and Mexico, large size (14”highx8.5”) 2011 scale varies, 144 pages, 430 detailed maps and 330 city maps ISBN 9781932081992 UPC 824033081993 $14.95cdn/us, E14.95 13.99GBP – This is the best road atlas ever published. It was originally produced for National Geographic and is of a far higher caliber than either the Rand or AMC atlases. Each large format double page is devoted to an individual State; for example, pages 54 and 55 cover Massachusetts in great detail, with inset maps of Boston, Springfield, Worcester, New Bedford, and Lowell. In addition to roads and smaller towns, historic sites and places of touristic interest are included for all parts of each State. In this case, that would include such things as a covered bridge near Lyonsville, the Gay Head lighthouse, and the old whaling church in  Eggertown. Florida is covered on four pages, New York State on six. This is an extremely detailed atlas, arranged alphabetically by State. Canada is well-represented on 11 pages, and Mexico is well-shown. As well, there is a comprehensive place names index and a ‘driving time’ map, as well as a mileage chart. This atlas offers everything! It is large in size, as is typical of such atlases; attractively covered; just printed, AVAILABLE.

American Highway Road Atlas for the USA, Canada, and Mexico A4 size (8.5x11”) 2011 96 pages, 140 detailed road maps, 55 large scale city maps ISBN 9781572627628 UPC 736530007621 $9.95cdn/us, E9.95 8.99GBP – This is the smaller, or more standard-sized version of the same National Geographic atlas as described above.  Although it is just as detailed, the page size is smaller and the print font sizes are smaller. This is an excellent atlas, attractively priced, up to date, and easily marketed, especially in Europe. In this version, each State fills one page instead of two, and some smaller States have been grouped together, but otherwise, the description above covers this title as well as the larger version. Both are comprehensive guides to travel around America; both are detailed road atlases with touristic information added. Both have hard card covers with no date on the cover, to enable a longer shelf life, and both are AVAILABLE.

USA Travel Reference Map 1st Ed. 2011 1:2,300,000 ISBN 9781553414513 UPC 815534145192 $9.95cdn/us, E8.95 7.99GBP – Well, we finally did it. After thirty years of mapping obscure and exotic countries all over the world, we finally completed mapping the most complex country on earth – the United States. Actually, this is a map of the 48 States, as we expanded the artwork so much that there wasn’t enough room for Alaska or Hawaii; sorry about that. This map is extremely detailed, showing every Interstate motorway, toll road, state highway, and secondary road in the USA, as well as thousands of urban areas, recreation sites, touristic points, and just about everything that we could think of to include. We printed the map on a larger-than normal sheet of paper, and did so double-sided to achieve the most detailed scale ever. The USA is the third most populous country in the world (after China and India) and has the most sophisticated road network on earth, so is a very difficult country to map. Proof-checking the place names proved to be incredibly difficult; the word Crockett, for example, has four different spellings, and an amazing number of towns retain ‘old’ English spellings. Regardless, the USA is a fascinating country to visit, and now it is available as an ITM map. I have to admit, I never thought we’d be publishing a map of America. Now, we’re developing a map of Ol’ Miss – the states bordering the Mississippi, as part of our new Discover America series. USA is printed on paper, double-sided, four-folded, and is AVAILABLE.
